(코리아타운뉴스) Janet Kim Becomes LAPD Helicopter Pilot
Kim is the first Asian-American female to hold position
At its downtown L.A. office, the LAPD held its “wings ceremony” to announce and celebrate Kim’s promotion. Kim, whose Korean name is Juhee, has been with the LAPD for more than 19 years. She told reporters that becoming the supervisor pilot has been a lifetime goal.
“It wasn’t easy to receive training to become a pilot after first starting off without any knowledge in this field,” said Kim, who was trained for 15 months. “It was an obstacle for me to overcome as I needed to know all the details about aviation.”
Kim will work as a commander pilot, a position designated to train other pilots. She added that she is excited about watching over L.A. from a helicopter on a daily basis.
Having joined the LAPD in 1998, Kim received her BA in public education from Biola University. She has since worked for the police academy as well as serving as the supervisor at the LAPD’s Olympic Community Police Station.
“I’ve always been motivated when people around me said that I can’t do certain things since a young age,” Kim said. “I’ve become the first Asian-American female to become LAPD’s supervisor pilot. Dreams are for anyone to achieve.”
