(짐이 새로 온 학생과 이야기를 하며…)

Jim: I'm going to put you in Level 3.

짐: 널 레벌 3 반에 넣을 거야.

Lee: Level 3? Can't I go to Level 4?

리: 레벌 3 반이라고요? 레벌 4로 갈 수 없어요?

Jim: I'm afraid Level 4 will be too difficult for you.

짐: 레벌 4는 너한테 너무 어려울 것 같은데.

Lee: My friends are in Level 4.

리: 제 친구들이 레벌 4에 있어서요.

Jim: I care more about you learning English. You'll have a touch time keeping up with the other students.

짐: 난 네가 영화 배우는 게 더 신경쓰이는데. 다른 학생들 따라가려면 어려울 거야.

Lee: How did I do on my grammar test?

리: 저 문법 시험 본 건 어땠어요?

Jim: You didn't do very well. You'll pick up a lot of grammar in Level 3.

짐: 아주 잘 하진 못했어. 레벌 3에서 문법을 많이 배울 게 될 거야.

Lee: Really?

리: 정말요?

Jim: Yes. Levels 4 5 and 6 involve a lot of writing and you need a strong grammar foundation.

짐: 그럼. 레벌 4 5 6은 작문이 많이 나오니까 문법 기초가 아주 튼튼해야 돼.

Lee: Okay.

리: 알겠어요.

*I’m afraid: 1. 혹시라도 ~할까 걱정되다. 2. 죄송하지만.

1. “I’m afraid it might rain on Saturday and ruin our picnic.” (혹시라도 토요일에 비가 와서 우리 피크닉 가는 거 망치지나 않을까 걱정돼.)

2. “I’m afraid I don’t have that shoe in size seven.” (저 구두 치수 7짜리로 없으면 어떡하죠.)

*a tough time: 힘들게, 어렵사리.

“We had a tough time getting here. The traffic was terrible.” (우리 여기 오느라고 무지 힘들었어. 길이 너무 막혔거든.)

*pick up (information): (어떤 정보를 공부하거나 들어서) 알게 돼다.

“I pick up a lot of Spanish from the workers in the kitchen at the restaurant.” (식당 주방에서 일하면서 다른 종업원들 덕분에 스패니시를 많이 알게 됐어.)
