(Kate has invited Susan to her house for coffee … )

Kate: I came across some beautiful shoes the other day.

Susan: Really? Did you buy them?

Kate: No. They cost a pretty penny.

Susan: How much were they?

Kate: Three hundred dollars!

Susan: Wow! That is expensive!

Kate: They were Italian.

Susan: (looking at her wrist watch) Oh, look at the time!

Kate: What gives?

Susan: I have to get home and tidy up. My mother-in-law is coming over to visit.

"I came across some pictures of me when I was in high school."

* (something) cost a pretty penny: 비싸다

"Her engagement ring cost a pretty penny."

* what gives?: 왜 그러세요?

"What gives? You haven't eaten anything on your plate. I thought you were hungry."
