Min Hee: Do you ever think back to the day we flew to the U.S?

민희: 우리가 미국으로 날아온 날 생각해 본 적 있어?

Cheol: Of course. We were tired and confused.

철: 물론 있지. 몸은 지치고 머리는 복잡했지.

Min Hee: Yes but we were very excited.

민희: 맞아. 한데 아주 설레기도 했어.

Cheol: That we were. We talked endlessly about how we were going to get ahead.

철: 우리 그랬지. 앞으로 어떻게 하면 앞서 나갈 수 있을까 얘기도 정말 많이 했다.

Min Hee: It‘s not as easy as we thought is it?

민희: 생각처럼 쉽지는 않았어 그렇지?

Cheol: That’s for sure. We‘ve had a lot of difficulties to get through.

철: 그럼. 어려움 많이 겪으면서 잘 이겨냈어.

Min Hee: We have come a long way in a few months.

민희: 몇 달 사이에 실력이 정말 많이 늘었어.

Cheol: But we still have many things to learn.

철: 하지만 아직 배울 게 너무 많아.

Min Hee: Thanks for reminding me.

민희: 그거 잘 지적했어.

Cheol: I don’t want you to get complacent and stop working hard.

철: 자기 도취에 빠져서 열심히 공부하다 말면 안되지.

기억할만한 표현

*get ahead: 앞지르다. 능가하다.

“I thought I was getting ahead but I found out that I wasn‘t.”

(내가 앞서 가고 있다고 생각했는데 알고 보니 아니었어.)

*get through: 어려움을 잘 이겨내다.

“If he gets through this financial crisis with a job I’ll be surprised.”

(그 사람이 직업과 관련해서 재정 위기를 잘 넘긴다면 놀랄 일이지.)

*have come a long way: 크게 발전하다.

“Computer technology has come a long way.” (컴퓨터 기술은 엄청나게 발전했어.)
