[오늘의 생활영어] work my ass off; 죽어라 일하다

(Anthony and Nick have just arrived at the office…)

(앤소니와 닉이 막 사무실에 도착해서…)

Anthony: What did you do this weekend?

앤소니: 이번 주말에 뭐했어?

Nick: I worked my ass off.

닉: 죽어라 일만 했어.

Anthony: What did you do?

앤소니: 뭐 했는데?

Nick: I helped my son move into his new house.

닉: 아들이 새 집으로 이사하는 거 거들어줬거든.

Anthony: You couldn't have been much help. You're over the hill.

앤소니: 거들면 얼마나 거들었겠어. 한창 나이도 아닌데.

Nick: That's what you think. I did most of the work!

닉: 그건 네 생각이고. 일은 내가 거의 다 했다니까!

Anthony: I don't believe that for a minute.

앤소니: 네 말은 전혀 안 믿긴다.

Nick: It's true. His friends were no shows.

닉: 진짜야. 아들 친구들은 코빼기도 안 보였어.

Anthony: How did you feel the next day?

앤소니: 그 다음날 몸이 어땠어?

Nick: Not so hot. I was very stiff.

닉: 별로 안 좋았어. 무지 뻐근했어.

*(one) is over the hill: 한창 때가 지나다. 한물가다.

"I thought he was over the hill but he won the tournament."

(그 사람 한 물 갔다고 생각했는데 토너먼트에서 우승했어.)

*no shows: (오기로 해놓고) 안 나타나다.

"There were a lot of no shows for the afternoon performance."

(오후 공연에는 오기로 하고 안 온 사람들이 많았어요.)

*not so hot: 별로야.

"Those microphones are not so hot. We need some new ones."

(저기 있는 마이크는 다 별로야. 우린 신제품이 좀 필요해.)
