[JSR] North Hollywood's High School Homecoming: A Blast from the Past

After weeks of preparations and activities leading up to our homecoming dance, we were all hyped up and more than excited to attend our Homecoming. The theme this year was a Blast from the Past, so for the spirit week leading up to the dance, each day was dedicated to a different decade. The accompanying costumes and hairstyles were spot on (especially all the neon colors on 80’s day!). Friday, we had a BLUE OUT, because everyone wants to be a smurf, as well as our school colors being blue and white. Four our pep rally, there were numerous sports and academic teams that were formally introduced to the crowds of students, with our golf team doing an exciting routine that the crowd definitely enjoyed. Just imagine nine girls shushing the crowd and doing a golf swing in front of hundreds of students. Our dance teams were crowd pleasers, as they always know how to make everyone move to the music. Our school has a tradition where our principal will perform, and everyone comes onto the floor and dances until the end of the assembly. Our perfectly executed pep rally got us all amped up for the homecoming game regardless of whether we lost or not. Spoiler alert: 42-9. As leadership members of our school we always sell chocolates to pay for the homecoming fireworks, which is one of the highlights of every homecoming football game.

The hours leading up to homecoming dance comprised the idealistic chick flick movie moment, as I got my makeup and hair done and picked out the perfect gown I was ecstatic to wear. I finished up and headed over to my friend’s house where we had girl talk and applied our finishing touches to the perfect soundtrack so we could practice our moves. In our chauffeured Porsche we arrived fashionably late and made our grand entrance at The Odyssey, a Granada Hills venue which overlooks the valley. Fairy lights hovered above from strings hung across its scenic porch, a charming touch of readymade ambience. Since the Odyssey is a full-service restaurant, we were treated to more substantial food and desserts than we generally see at high school functions. We all took turns on the patio taking pictures and admiring the view. As seniors we tried to take as many pictures as we could to keep as memories, and my phone storage was completely full by the
end of the night.

Have you ever been to a dance and seen a tumbleweed roll across the abandoned dancefloor because everyone is too nervous to cut loose? Well not us! NOHOs were getting’ DOWN to hits from the 80’s and beyond. By far, the most active area at homecoming was the dancefloor, evidenced by the sweatiness visible in our pictures. It was thrilling to see everyone so focused on the moment. The room became heated, as everyone was on the dance floor, but we weren’t fazed. We took our heels off, loosened our ties, and went in for more. Before we knew it there was a huge mosh pit and people were dancing like their lives depended on it. All in all it was a successful night that will make for an amazing senior memory.
