[JSR] Teens Spread Awareness on Environmental Issues

Burbank High School’s Environmental Conservation Club is a club made to spread awareness of environmental issues. We talk about environmental issues in meetings every other Wednesday and try to spread awareness to club members. The club members then spread awareness through the information from the meeting. We also do trash pick-ups at school in order to clean the environment.

Schools are a vulnerable place for pollution and a very risky place to be polluted. Schools and students are usually unaware of the environmental pollution they’re causing and often discard their trash improperly. This can cause lots of damage to the environment of the school and can cause damage to students’ health. Students should be safe around school and not live in contaminated areas.

I try to get involved in this club by participating in the trash pick-ups after school and provide information about how cigarette filters affect marine life. I did a scientific research on improperly discarded filter by extracting the chemicals from the filters using simulated stomach acid of a marine life. I injected the extracted substances into GC-MS and analyzed the data and how they would possibly affect marine life.

Since Cigarette filters are the most found waste in the ocean, it is needless to say that cigarette filters will affect marine life as well as humans’ lives through the foods we consume.

Environmental Conservation Club is not only a beneficial club to spread awareness about environmental issues but it is a club that prevents pollution in nearby communities for better health of people of these communities. This club has benefitted me by providing more information about the issues in order to notify the extreme damages we are causing to the environment.
