[오늘의 생활영어] break the news to (somebody); 안 좋은 소식을 알리다, 전하다

(Two friends are having lunch … )

Alicia: I really don't know how to break the news to you.

Kelly: Just tell the truth. I won't take it personally.

Alicia: Well, I'm afraid you'll lose control of yourself.

Kelly: Sometimes it's wise to be direct. Come on don't beat around the bush!

Alicia: Since you want an honest answer I'll tell you the truth.

Kelly: All right. What is the truth?

Alicia: We've won two free tickets to Hawaii for a seven-day vacation.

Kelly: What? Are you serious?

Alicia: I'm serious. I got a letter today.

Kelly: You had me worried. I'm happy you were putting me on.

* lose control of (oneself):

"She lost control of herself and cried for hours."

* beat around the bush:

"If you think he's beating around the bush tell him."

* (one) is putting (one) on: 농담하다 놀리다

"If you're putting me on I'm going to be angry."
