(코리아타운뉴스) “We Receive Any Donation. Used Cars Are Even Better!”

Nonprofit organization Happy Village

“Sometimes, we wonder if they would really need some of these items, but it still apparently means a lot to other underfunded nonprofit organizations.”

Mark Lee, who is in charge of operating Korean-American nonprofit Happy Village, has recently donated office supplies to Hispanic nonprofit El Centro de Ayuda. The donated items were nothing special. They were two sets of desks, printer, conference table and 15 chairs. Many of the items are common office supplies.

“A lawyer’s office contacted us when they heard that we were donating the items and connected them to us,” Lee said.

For many of the nonprofits, using someone else’s used goods is nothing to be ashamed of, as the concept of their existence is to share and care.

“It is already well known that Happy Village has donated office supplies and used cars to 70 nearby nonprofits,” Lee said. “That’s what it means to share. We’re still asked to find used cars for some organizations.” Lee added that many organizations are in need of used cars, trucks and vans to perform their duties.

Lee said that the supply has not been able to fulfill the demand just yet before adding that making such donations will help the image of the Korean-American community.

Happy Village’s donation project is still at its infancy, but Lee believes that once it is better promoted, more Korean-Americans will join in on the effort for bigger causes.

The last set of donations marked Happy Village’s third of the current project. It first donated printers to South L.A.’s nonprofit Watch Vision. It then helped out with the World Harvest Food Bank by a Hispanic nonprofit in Watts.

Meanwhile, it may be troublesome for many used car owners who have vehicles which they have to pay money for in order to get rid of them. If they choose to donate it instead, they can streamline the process of giving it away and also receive tax benefits. Happy Village at times even fixes and sells broken used cars to raise money for their funding donation. Tax benefits are notified to the vehicles’ sellers within one month.

Benefits on taxes vary, but if the used car is sold for under a couple hundred dollars, the benefit could be up to $500. For vehicles sold for over $500, the benefit could match the sale price.
