연방정부에 이메일-서명운동 전개

온주실협, 불법담배 대책 촉구 캠페인

온주한인실업인협회(회장 윤종실)가 불법담배 횡행에 대한 대정부 캠페인에 돌입, 연방정부 관계 장관에게 이메일 보내기 및 서명운동을 전개하고 있다.

10일 실협은 스탁웰 데이([e-mail]) 공안장관, 짐 플레허티([e-mail]) 재무장관, 토니 클레멘트([e-mail]) 보건장관, 고든 오코너([e-mail]) 국세청장관, 다이앤 알본치([e-mail]) 스몰비즈니스장관의 이메일과 예문을 회원들에게 알리기 시작했다.

실협은 이번 캠페인을 한인 및 캐나다사회로 확대하기 위해 이메일 전달 운동도 펼치고 있다. 불법담배로 인한 편의점의 매상감소만이 아니고 불법담배를 버젓이 피우면서도 죄의식을 느끼지 못하는 사회적 관념이 더 큰 문제라는 것이다. 정품과의 가격차이가 지나치게 크다보니 이를 당연시 하는 경향이 있다는 설명이다.

실협 김근래 전무는 “불법담배를 싸게 샀다고 회원 가게에 와서 자랑하는 캐네디언들도 많다. 학생들도 전혀 죄의식 없이 싼 원주민 담배만을 찾고 있다. 사회적인 문제가 되고 있기 때문에 이 운동의 범위를 확대하기로 했다”고 밝혔다.

서명운동도 실협회원 및 가족, 업소 고객들까지 확대 실시한다. 서명서는 11일자 실협뉴스를 통해 배포하며 팩스(416-789-7834) 등으로 실협에 보내면 된다. 오는 8월경 스탁웰 데이 장관에게 서명서를 전달할 계획이다.

실협은 지난 30일 공안장관의 의회 보좌관인 데이브 맥켄지 의원과의 간담회에서 불법담배에 대한 연방정부의 강력한 단속을 촉구하고 캠페인 전개 의사를 밝힌바 있다.

We ask the Government of Canada to act immediately and fight against illicit tobacco vigorously and continuously!

FACTS ABOUT ILLICIT TOBACCO.

1) The illicit tobacco trade presents a serious threat to public safety in Canada. Profits from illegal tobacco products fund other criminal activities, such as drug and gun trafficking. The rise of organized criminal activity in the contraband tobacco market threatens the safety of all Canadians.
2) While youth smoking rates are at an all-time low, these cheap, easily accessible, untaxed contraband cigarettes are widespread among youth.
3) There is a mounting financial cost to government, police estimate illegal smokes cost Canadians $1.6 billion in lost taxes every year. RCMP says there has been a 10-fold increase in contraband cigarette seizures in the last 5 years.
4) For small family-run convenience stores, contraband tobacco is the number one issue that they face. Convenience stores receive more than 50% of our sales from the legal sale of tobacco. Their tobacco sales have decreased rapidly for last few years due to contraband tobacco. The market share of contraband tobacco in Ontario and Quebec is estimated as 35% and increasing with alarming rate.
