[JSR] Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

“And our National Champions first place in the Championship division Large Hip hop give it up for PV Peninsula B Varsity!”

The whole room erupted with cheers. There were endless tears and screams. Palos Verdes Peninsula High School’s Coed Choreo is a high school hip hop team made up of both boys and girls that competes in several competitions throughout the year. The team is split into Junior Varsity and Varsity. Both are part of the same team but compete in different divisions. Because there were so many different competitions and so many different teams, there were multiple losses and wins. Although the losses brought the team down, through lots of practice and work, they were able to achieve their goals of winning first in almost every category at the USA National Championships this year.

Varsity won 1st in most of the championship divisions and Junior Varsity won 1st in all of the open divisions. Seven first place trophies were won in total. Varsity also won a National Scholarship, which was an amazing feat for our school. It has always been the goal for this team.

Asumi Shuda, a member of the Junior Varsity team, said, “The moment we got 1st place for large was such a surreal moment that will stay with me for a long time. The fact that all the hard work we put in, all those endless hours of cleaning and perfecting, payed off was so rewarding and I'm so proud of the team for accomplishing such a feat.”

As the years go on, the dance students improve and grow immensely, and they become closer like a family. So much work is put into each dance; every dancer puts their blood, sweat, and tears into every move. Eigo Ebata states, “During Sophomore Year, I felt the most strongly intertwined with my family on coed, and as a JV Captain, I was very proud to see the unity we had made as a team out of love.” Dancing together as a team not only shows off talents and skills, it also creates unbreakable bonds that will last forever.

Recently, the Coed Choreo “No Limits” showcase occurred and it showed all the dances that were performed throughout the year. The seats were packed and many of the people had to sit on the ground. The reputation of the Coed Choreo team had grown so much over the years. “Teamwork makes the dream work” is the slogan for the team and it truly proves itself right, as seen from the results of this year. The team is full of numerous gifted dancers and they never give up no matter what hardships are thrown their way.
