[JSR] Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Wedding

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle officially tied the knot on May 19th at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. After months of speculation, they announced their engagement in late November 2017. Ever since then, there has been a controversy surrounding Meghan Markle becoming a member of the Royal family.

Meghan Markle was born on August 4, 1981 and raised in Los Angeles, California. She attended an all-girls Catholic private school called Immaculate Heart High School in Los Angeles and graduated in 1999. She then graduated from Northwestern University in 2003 and went on to become an actress. Her most notable role is her portrayal of a paralegal named Rachel Zane on the American TV show Suits from 2011 to 2017. She is also known for her charity work as she is a philanthropist. Regarding her personal life before she met Prince Harry, she married actor and producer Trevor Engelson in September 2011, but ultimately divorced in August 2013. In June 2016, she was introduced to Prince Harry through a mutual friend and eventually began a relationship with him.

The controversy surrounding Meghan Markle becoming a part of the Royal family was mainly for three reasons. First, she was an American. The last time an American married someone from the Royal family was Wallis Simpson in 1937. When Edward VIII, the King of the United Kingdom expressed his desire to marry Simpson, who divorced two husbands prior, he was opposed by the British government and the Church of England. He then abdicated the throne and married Simpson on June 3, 1937. This connects to the second reason being that Rachel is also a divorcee. Many people thought that it was unacceptable for her to marry Prince Harry as her ex-husband is still alive. Lastly, the third reason is that Meghan is biracial. Her father is Caucasian while her mother is African American. This has stirred a controversy, but the Queen gave her approval which showed how the Royal family was becoming more inclusive.

On May 19, 2018. Meghan Markle Prince Harry married at St George’s Chapel. Among her Suits co-stars, there were many guests at the wedding such as Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, and Serena Williams. After the wedding, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were granted the title of Duke and Duchess of Sussex by Queen Elizabeth II. Justin Kim, a Loyola High School senior, states that, “I think that the marriage between Meghan Markle and Prince Harry signifies a shift in the royalty of England. Given that Markle is an American and a divorcee, the marriage is quite different from the Royal norm.” We can only hope for the best for them as they start their lives together as husband and wife.
