(코리아타운뉴스) Visually Aappealing Korean Desserts Popular in the U.S.
The trend is changing how desserts are served
It is common to see people sitting around at cafes in Los Angeles Koreatown taking photos of their desserts nowadays. As the social media age continues to grow strong, it is becoming increasingly important for restaurants to present visually appealing desserts more so than making it taste better.
“Korean desserts prioritize visual appeal that is tailored to the latest trend,” the New York Times reported. “It’s changing how businesses are serving desserts.”
L.A. is more or less a battlefield for restaurants as they are trying to come up with their own ways to make visually appealing food. Café Bora on Western and Fourth is famous for its colorful sweet potato ice cream in traditionally Korean silverware. Among many of their items, fish-shaped pastry topped with ice cream has become something of a “must-try” for Koreatown visitors in recent months. Ice cream business Holy Roly is also famous for its decoration.
Case in point, many of the “desserteries” nowadays are first popularized on Instagram. Many of those are owned and operated by Korean- and Asian-American entrepreneurs. Bustopping, a Korean-owned ice cream business, is one of the most popular ones with its pink flamengo and mermaid shaped ice cream. Shaved ice café Sweet Moment is also one of the hottest dessert spots in New York. Its shaved ice is served in a palm-sized “bingbix” and is considered an “Instagrammable” dessert among young people.
