Jane: What do you think of John McCain?

제인: 잔 맥케인에 대해 어떻게 생각해?

Kent: He doesn‘t stand a chance.

켄트: 맥케인은 승산이 없어.

Jane: He’s been closing the gap lately.

제인: 최근 들어 격차를 좁히고 있어.

Kent: He‘s got a long way to go to beat Obama.

켄트: 오바마를 이기려면 한참 멀었어.

Jane: I know it but it’s making the election more exciting.

제인: 알아. 하지만 그래서 선거가 더 재미있게 됐어.

Kent: Well it‘s giving McCain supporters like you false hope.

켄트: 글쎄 그래서 너 같은 매케인 지지자들이 헛된 희망을 갖고 있어.

Jane: If I were you I wouldn’t be so confident.

제인: 내가 너라면 그렇게 자신만만해 하지 않을 거야.

Kent: Maybe you‘re right but I just can’t help myself.

켄트: 네 말이 맞을 지도 모르지만 자신감이 드는 걸 어떡해.

Jane: We all better hope that whoever is elected they can solve all the problems the country has.

제인: 우리 모두 누가 당선되든 국가적 난제를 모두 풀기를 바라는 게 좋을 것 같다.

Kent: That is very true.

켄트: 지당한 말씀.

*stand a chance: 승산이 있다. 가능성이 있다.

“I thought the Dodgers stood a chance to win The World Series but I was wrong.” (월드 시리즈에서 다저스가 승산이 있다고 생각했는데 내가 틀렸어.)

*have a long way to go: 갈 길이 멀다. 아직 멀었다.

“I have a long way to go to be happy with my life.” (내가 만족할 만큼 살려면 아직 멀었어.)

*false hope(s): 헛된 희망.

“The marketing of the drugs raised false hopes that a cure was available.” (이들 약품의 마케팅이 펼쳐지면서 치료 방법이 있다는 헛된 희망이 생겼다.)
