에세이도 인터뷰…솔직하고 자신있게 써라

2019-20학년도 대입 지원서가 지난 1일부터 전격 공개됐다. 사립대 지원에 사용하는 공통지원서와 캘리포니아 주립대인 UC지원서는 신입생 선발을 원활하게 진행할 수 있게 지원서를 개편했다. 치열해지고 있는 대학 입학 경쟁에서 합격률을 조금이라도 높이려면 각 지원서를 미리 읽고 준비하는 게 좋다. 무엇보다 대학들은 공통지원서와 연합지원서, UC지원서에서 요구하는 프롬프터(prompter)는 지원자의 내면을 파악하는 도구로 사용하고 있는 만큼 주제를 미리 읽고 준비하는 것도 합격률을 높이는 방법이다.



공통지원서

하버드 등 미국내 900여 개 사립대학에서 사용하는 공통지원서(Common Application)가 홈페이지(https://apply.commonapp.org/Login)에 공개한 올해 지원서의 특징은 휴대폰에서 쉽게 작성할 수 있도록 다양한 기능을 추가한 것이다.

무엇보다 검색 기능을 강화해 지원서 작성시 다른 페이지와 쉽게 연결될 수 있도록 했다.

또 지망대에 대한 정보를 수월하게 찾을 수 있도록 대학 관련 정보를 확대했으며, 신입 지원자 외에 편입 지원자에 대한 지원서 이용 단계를 단순화시켜 좀 더 쉽게 이용할 수 있도록 했다.

이밖에 경제적 문제 등으로 대학을 중퇴했다가 다시 돌아오는 학생들이나 연장자, 미군 출신 학생들을 위한 세션도 준비중이다.

공통지원서 주관처에 따르면 올해에도 80만 명의 지원자가 개인당 평균 5개 이상 접수할 것으로 추산하고 있다.

▶에세이 프롬프터: 올해 에세이 프롬프터는 지난해와 동일하다. 시간 가는 줄도 모르게 푹 빠지게 한 주제나 생각, 개념을 서술하거나 자유 주제를 선택해 650자 이내로 작성하면 된다. 에세이는 성적 외에 지원자의 모습을 보여줄 수 있는 공간으로 분류된다. 각 대학 입학사정관들은 에세이 내용을 통해 지원자의 인성이나 성격을 파악하는 만큼 솔직하게 쓸 것을 강조하고 있다. 다음은 공통지원서에서 제시한 에세이 프롬프터. 참고로 지난해 지원자가 가장 많이 응답한 에세이 프롬프터는 7번으로, 전체 지원자의 24.1%가 관련 답을 제출했다. 그 뒤를 이어 5번이 23.7%로 파악됐으며, 3위는 21.1%를 받은 2번 내용이다.

1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?

4. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.

5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?

7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.



연합지원서

올해 연합지원서를 받는 대학은 하버드, 예일, 스탠퍼드, 캘택 등 150곳으로, 지난해보다 20여개 대학이 더 추가됐다. 에세이는 총 5개의 주제가 제시됐으며 이중 하나를 선택해 500-550자 길이로 작성하면 된다. 이곳에도 자유주제를 선택해 쓸 수 있도록 허용해 지원자의 창의적인 글을 볼 수 있도록 했다.

연합지원서의 경우 고등학생들이 대입 준비를 효율적으로 할 수 있도록 돕자는 취지로 설계한 만큼 학생들이 활용할 수 있는 도구가 다양하다. 무엇보다 지원서에 필요한 추천서나 에세이 작성에 필요한 아이디어, 사진이나 비디오 등을 저장할 수 있는 '락커' 시스템은 유명하다.

특히 지원자는 장소와 상관없이 언제든지 자료를 메모하고 보관할 수 있으며 또 고교 졸업 후에도 계속 사용할 수 있어 편입생들에게 유용하다.

▶에세이 프롬프터

1. Tell a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it.

2. Describe a time when you made a meaningful contribution to others in which the greater good was your focus. Discuss the challenges and rewards of making your contribution.

3. Has there been a time when you’ve had a long-cherished or accepted belief challenged? How did you respond? How did the challenge affect your beliefs?

4. What is the hardest part of being a student now? What’s the best part? What advice would you give a younger sibling or friend (assuming they would listen to you)?

5. Submit an essay on a topic of your choice.



유니버설 지원서

유니버설지원서는 다른 지원서에 비해 간단하다. 받는 대학수도 20여곳으로 많지 않다. 다른 지원서와 다른 점은 에세이 주제다. 정해놓은 주제가 없어 지원자는 자신이 원하는 글을 작성할 수 있다.



UC지원서

캘리포니아의 최대 주립대 시스템인 UC도 지난 1일부터 지원서 웹사이트(www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply)를 온라인에 공개했다.

UC의 경우 10년 만에 지원서를 재디자인해 눈길을 끌고 있는 중이다.

가장 큰 변화는 항목당 5개씩만 제출하도록 제한하던 수상기록과 특별활동 기재 규정을 항목당 최대 20개까지 제출할 수 있도록 한 점이다. UC의 이같은 조치는 지원자가 참여한 학교 외 활동을 좀 더 자세히 쓸 수 있도록 한 것으로 심사에도 적지 않은 영향을 미칠 것으로 보인다. UC는 성적과 수업 내용, 각종 대입 시험, 특별활동, 에세이만으로 합격자를 선발하고 있다.

에세이는 8개의 문제 중 4개를 골라 각각 350자 미만으로 작성해야 한다. 작성된 지원서는 11월 1일부터 30일까지 접수하면 된다.

UC어바인의 브라이언 주 입학본부장 대행은 "지원자를 직접 인터뷰할 수 없기 때문에 에세이를 통해 지원자를 파악한다"며 "남의 이야기가 아닌 본인의 생각과 이야기를 들려줘야 입학사정관이 심사를 제대로 할 수 있다"고 조언했다.

▶에세이 프롬프터

1. Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time.

2. Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.

3. What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?

4. Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.

5. Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?

6. Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and/or outside of the classroom.

7. What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?

8. Beyond what has already been shared in your application, what do you believe makes you stand out as a strong candidate for admissions to the University of California?
