[오늘의 생활영어] to be asking for trouble; 문제를 자초하다
(Two college classmates are talking …
Donny: I have a major problem.
Paul: How can a college student have a major problem?
Donny: One of the best basketball players in school is failing his math class.
Paul: Do you think that's unusual? It's par for the course.
Donny: The coach said the player won't be able to play in the next tournament if he doesn't pass the next test.
Paul: What does that have to do with you?
Donny: The coach wants me to take the place of the player on the next math test.
Paul: You mean take the test for him? That's asking for trouble.
Donny: But the coach's wife is my math teacher. She could make a lot of trouble for me if I don't take it.
Paul: You're in a no win situation.
* par for the course:
"Raining all week is par for the course in Ireland."
* take the place of (someone): ~ 대신으로 일하다 ~의 자리를 떠맡다
"I hope the new teacher takes the place of my writing teacher."
* a no win situation:
"Getting a divorce when you have kids is a no win situation."
