“대학 입학의 길을 보여드립니다”

워싱턴 최대 한인 교육 이벤트
중앙일보 칼리지페어 16일 개최
오전 10시 웨스트민스터 스쿨서

오는 16일(토) 오전 10시 버지니아 애난데일 소재 웨스트민스터 스쿨에서 개막하는 ‘제12회 중앙일보 칼리지페어’가 대학 입학을 앞둔 워싱턴 지역 학생 및 학부모들이 꼭 찾아야 할 워싱턴 지역 최대 한인 교육 이벤트로 주목 받고 있다.

이번 칼리지페어에는 웨스트포인트, 셰퍼드 대학, 퍼듀대학 등 유명 대학과 조지워싱턴, 조지타운, 메릴랜드 대학을 비롯 20개 이상의 대학 부스가 펼쳐져 학교 홍보를 위해 참가한 학교관계자, 졸업생, 재학생들이 친절한 상담을 진행한다.

특히 기조연설과 각종 세미나는 이번 칼리지페어의 하이라이트.

‘꿈꾸는 엄마가 기적을 만든다’ 등의 저서와 3500여회 강연을 통해 대한민국 대표 교육 강사로 우뚝 선 황경애씨의 특별강연은 한인학생과 학부모들에게 교육에 대한 진지한 성찰을 전달할 것이다.



고달픈 이민 생활을 견뎌야 했던 ‘싱글맘’으로 세 자녀를 명문대에 4년 전액 장학금을 받고 입학시켜 각종 언론에 소개된 황경애씨는 이후 교육 세미나 강사로 변신해 전 세계를 누비며 강연을 펼쳐왔다.

황씨는 “미국에서 자녀들이 정체성을 잊지 않고, 미국 주류사회의 일원으로 당당히 살도록 돕기 위해서는 ‘교육’이 가장 큰 투자”라면서 “자녀들에게 큰 사랑을 주고, 많은 시간을 투자하고, 재능 계발을 위해서는 비용을 아끼지 않는 ‘특별할 것 없어 더욱 특별한 교육 노하우’를 워싱턴 한인들에게 전수하겠다”고 전했다.

로빈 코마 전 조지 워싱턴대 입학사정관은 에세이를 통해 학생들을 선발한 자신의 경험을 토대로 ‘입학사정관들의 마음을 사로잡는 매력적인 에세이 쓰는 법’을 주제로 실질적인 조언을 건넨다.

코마 강사는 “에세이야말로 SAT 등 획일화된 시험 점수와는 다르게 지원자의 장점을 어필할 수 있는 매개”라며 “지원자와 학교의 공통분모를 찾으려는 입학사정관에게 알맞은 연결고리를 찾는 방법을 이번 강연에서 전하겠다”고 밝혔다.

또 C2 에듀케이션 에드워드 김 교육개발 및 커리큘럼 담당 이사는 낮 12시 SAT 특강을 통해 지난 2016년부터 개정된 SAT를 살펴보고, 각종 표준화 시험이 대학 입학에 미치는 영향을 심층적으로 분석해 준다. 김 강사는 “SAT, ACT, AP, IB는 각각 구조적인 특징을 갖고 있으며, 대학 입시에 특정적인 역할을 한다”면서 “이번 강의가 대학입시를 앞둔 고등학생, 학부모는 물론 7학년, 8학년 학생들에게도 큰 도움이 될 것”이라고 강조했다.

이와 함께 NOVA 대학 관계자가 진행하는 ‘애플리케이션 세미나’와 제일학원이 실시하는 적성검사가 마련돼 대학입시원서 작성에 대한 직접적인 조언을 건넨다. APIASF가 진행하는 대학 학자금 세미나에서는 아시아계 학생들을 위한 각종 장학 프로그램과 지원 방법에 대한 강연이 이뤄질 예정이다. 2시50분부터는 대한항공 서울행 티켓 등 푸짐한 상품이 내걸린 경품추첨이 열려 참석자들에게 기쁨을 선사한다.
갈수록 좁아지고 있는 대학 합격의 문을 통과할 수 있는 방법을 워싱턴 한인 학생과 학부모에게 선사한다는 목표로 중앙일보가 매년 펼치는 ‘칼리지페어’는 맥도널드가 타이틀 스폰서를 맡아 후원한다.

2017 12th Annual Washington D.C. College Fair, hosted by The Korea Daily Newspaper-Washington D.C. will be held on Saturday, September 16th, 2017 from 10:00am to 3:00pm at Westminster School (3819 Gallows Rd, Annandale, VA 22003).
The college fair is a comprehensive education expo tailored for Metro Washington’s growing korean american community. Historically, over 500 talented students from throughout Virginia, Maryland, and the Washington D.C. have attended this college fair, annually.
Through this event, students and parents will gain better insight on how to choose and succeed in college. A great lineup of experts and inspirational speakers will introduce students to successful college experience, along with numerous expert seminars on application process, financial aid, SAT and Essay.
Keynote speaker, Hwang Kyung Ae is one of most popular educational instructor in South Korea. She will share the audience her journey. How a first generation immigrant single mom successfully raised three children and led them to enter most prestigious college of US.
Various seminars are prepared for the students. APIASF College Fund Seminar, represented by Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund will educate how to receive scholarship with the program.
Edward Kim, the Director of Education Development and Curriculum for C2 Education will provide students with an in-depth look at how standardized testing affects college admissions and much more. Also, Ms. Robyn Komar, outside Admissions Reader for George Washington University and a professional member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling will discuss the different types of college essays (Common application, Coalition application, school-specific supplements, etc). And she will go over how the college essay is different than other types of writing, topics to avoid and how to start the brainstorming process for ideas.
