[오늘의 생활영어] Close a deal; 거래를 성사시키다

(Marty and Ed are talking in the office…)

Marty: What are you doing for lunch on Friday?
마티: 금요일 점심 때 뭐해?
Ed: I’m taking a client to lunch.
에드: 고객에게 점심 대접할 거야.
Marty: Can you get out of it.

마티: 그거 안 할 수 없어.
Ed: I don’t want to. We’re about to close a very big deal.
에드: 어떻게 안 해. 아주 큰 거래를 성사시키는 자리인데.
Marty: That’s too bad.
마티: 그거 참 안됐다.
Ed: Why? What do you have going on?
에드: 왜? 무슨 일인데?
Marty: Something that you would have loved doing.
마티: 네가 안하고는 못 배기는 게 있어.
Ed: Tell me what it is. Why can’t we do it next week?
에드: 뭔지 말을 해봐. 다음 주에 하면 안 되는 거야?
Marty: It has to be done this Friday. You blew your chance.
마티: 꼭 이번 금요일에 해야 돼. 좋은 기회를 날린 거야.
Ed: Oh, well.
에드: 허, 참.

기억할만한 표현

*get out of it (or something): 약속한 일을 안 하다.
“She got out of going to the party because she was sick.” (그녀는 아파서 파티에 안 가려고 했어.)

*going on: 일이 일어나고 있는.
“She didn’t understand what was going on.” (그녀는 일이 어떻게 돌아가는지 몰랐어.)

*(one) blows his or her chance: 좋은 기회를 날려버리다.
“I think we have blown our chance to buy the business.” (우린 사업체를 살 좋은 기회를 날려버린 것 같아.)
