Alicia: Mom can Stacey stay over tonight?

얼리셔: 엄마 스테이시가 오늘 밤 우리 집에 와서 자도 돼요?

Karen: Not tonight.

캐런: 오늘 밤은 안 돼.

Alicia: Come on Mom. If you let her we'll help you make dinner and wash the dishes.

얼리셔: 왜요 엄마. 허락해 주시면 저희가 저녁 준비하고 설거지 하는 거 도울게요.

Karen: Nothing doing. Not during the week.

캐런: 안 돼. 주중에는 안 돼요.

Alicia: Let's talk it over before you make a decision.

얼리셔: 얘기를 해보고 결정하면 되잖아요?

Karen: There will be no discussion. The answer is no.

캐런: 얘기해 볼 것 없다. 결론은 안 돼.

Alicia: I really want her to Mom. It's really important.

얼리셔: 엄마 스테이시가 꼭 왔으면 좋겠어요. 정말 그렇게 해야 된단 말이에요.

Karen: The rule is that no one can spend the night during the week.

캐런: 주중에는 아무도 자고 갈 수 없는 것으로 규칙을 정했잖니.

Alicia: That's why I don't have any friends.

얼리셔: 그래서 나한테 친구가 없는 거야.

Karen: If it's that important she can stay over on Saturday.

캐런: 그게 그렇게 중요하면 토요일에 와서 자고 가면 되지.

▶stay over: (다른 사람의 집에서) 하룻밤을 자다.
"If she's staying over tonight, you'd better clean your room."
(오늘밤 걔가 하루 자고 갈 거면 네 방 청소해야지.)


▶nothing doing: 안 돼.
"Nothing doing. I'm not lending you any money."
(안 돼. 너한텐 한 푼도 못 빌려줘.)


▶spend the night: (어디에서) 하룻밤을 보내다.
"I spent the night at the airport because all the flights were cancelled."
(비행기 운항이 모두 취소돼서 공항에서 하룻밤을 보냈어.)
