(One of Roger's students is asking him about Los Angeles…)

(라저의 반 학생이 LA에 대해서 물어본다…)

Jae Woo: When did you come to Los Angeles from New York?

재우: 뉴욕에서 LA로 언제 오셨어요?

Roger: Oh I came out to Los Angeles before you were born.

라저: 아 내가 LA로 왔을 때 너는 태어나지도 않았어.

Jae Woo: When was that?

재우: 그게 언제예요?

Roger: I came out here in May of 1972.

라저: 1972년 5월에 여기로 왔어.

Jae Woo: Wow! Was Los Angeles different back then?

재우: 와! 그 때는 지금하고 LA가 달랐어요?

Roger: Oh yes. As I look back there were very few Korean or Japanese restaurants.

라저: 아 그럼. 그 때를 돌아보면 한식당이나 일식당은 거의 없었지.

Jae Woo: What else was different?

재우: 또 뭐가 달랐어요?

Roger: The freeways weren't as packed. It wasn't as crowded as it is these days.

라저: 프리웨이가 꽉 차지 않았어. 요즘처럼 복잡하지 않았어.

Jae Woo: Do you miss those days?

재우: 그 때가 그리우세요?

Roger: No. Life moves on and you have to move with it.

라저: 아니야. 인생은 나아가는 거고 우리도 같이 나아가야지.

기억할만한 표현

▶back then: 그 때는. 당시에는.
"Thirty years ago things were different. Back then we didn't have computers."
(30년 전에는 상황이 달랐어. 당시엔 컴퓨터가 없었어.)

▶ (a place or space) is packed: (어디가) 꽉 차다.
"The night club was so packed, it was difficult to dance."
(나이트 클럽은 사람들로 꽉 차서 춤을 출 수가 없었어.)

▶these days: 요즘.
"These days, people use computers to do almost everything."
(요즘엔 사람들이 거의 모든 일을 컴퓨터를 사용해서 해.)
