[오늘의 생활영어] burn off (해가 나면서) 안개가 걷히다
(Cathy and her husband Ned are driving on the freeway…)(캐시와 남편 네드가 프리웨이를 달리며…)
Cathy: This fog is really thick.
캐시: 안개가 정말 짙게 꼈네.
Ned: It'll burn off soon.
네드: 곧 걷힐 거야.
Cathy: Maybe this isn't a good idea.
캐시: 지금 운전하는 거 좋은 생각이 아닌 것 같아.
Ned: Don't worry. I'll be careful.
네드: 걱정 마. 조심할게.
Cathy: But the traffic is moving at a snail's pace.
캐시: 하지만 차들이 굼벵이처럼 느리게 움직이잖아.
Ned: It'll just take a little longer to get there.
네드: 거기 도착하는 데 조금 더 걸릴 거야.
Cathy: Well I think we should turn back.
캐시: 글쎄 다시 돌아가야 될 것 같은데.
Ned: My Mom is expecting us and I don't want to disappoint her.
네드: 엄마가 우릴 기다리고 계신데 실망시켜 드리기 싫어.
Cathy: We can go next weekend.
캐시: 다음 주말에 가면 되잖아.
Ned: I don't want to put it off. We did that last time we planned to see her.
네드: 미루고 싶지 않아서 그래. 지난 번에도 엄마 뵈러 가기로 하고 미뤘잖아.
▶move at a snail's pace:굼뜨다,굼벵이처럼 느리다,
"You're moving at a snail's pace" You'll never get your work
done."
(너 왜그렇게 굼떠.그러다 일 못 끝내겠다.)
▶turn back:되돌아가다.
"We turned back because the road was closed."
(우린 길이 막혀서 되돌아왔어.)
▶put off (something): (무엇을)미루다.
"I am putting off my plans to marry Alice."
(앨리스와 결혼하려던 계획 미루려고 해.)
