[오늘의 생활영어] cut corners; 절약하다

(직장 동료 둘이 휴식 시간에 이야기를 나누며…)



Charlie: Hey Paul let's go to that new Korean restaurant for lunch today.

찰리: 어이 폴 오늘 점심은 새로 문 연 그 한국 음식점에 가자.

Paul: I have to pass.

폴: 난 못 가.

Charlie: What's wrong?

찰리: 왜 그래?

Paul: Money is tight and my wife and I have to cut corners.

폴: 돈이 없어서 아내하고 나하고 절약해야 돼.

Charlie: I'm sorry to hear that.

찰리: 그거 안 됐다.

Paul: I'm sure things will get better but I have to watch my wallet right now.

폴: 상황은 분명 나아지겠지만 지금은 지출을 조심해야 돼.

Charlie: I completely understand.

찰리: 충분히 이해해.

Paul: If you go bring back one of those menus. I'd like to see what they serve.

폴: 그 식당에 가면 차림표 하나만 가져와. 무슨 음식이 있나 알고 싶으니까.

Charlie: Sure.

찰리: 그래.

Paul: (Looking at his wristwatch.) Oh it's time to get back to work.

폴: (손목시계를 보며) 아 다시 일하러 갈 시간이다.

▶I have to pass (or I’m going to pass): (제의, 초대를 거절하며) 난 됐어.

Sarah: “Susan, would you like to try this chocolate cake?”

(새라: 수전, 이 초콜릿 케잌 한 번 맛 볼래.)

Susan: “Thanks, but I’m going to pass. I’m on a diet.”

(수전: 고맙긴 하지만 난 됐어. 다이어트 중이거든.)

▶Money is tight: 돈이 없다. 돈에 쪼들리다.

“Money is tight, so we can’t go to restaurants for a while.”

(돈이 없어서 우린 한 동안 식당에 못 가.)

▶watch (one’s) wallet: 돈을 아껴서 쓰다. (‘cut corners’와 ‘money is tight’와 비슷한 말).

“I have to watch my wallet, so I’m buying hamburgers now instead of steaks.”

(돈을 아껴서 써야 돼서 이젠 스테이크 대신 햄버거 사먹어.)
