(Sandy is talking to her Dad at home…)

(샌디가 집에서 아빠와 이야기를 한다…)


Sandy: Dad, can I catch a movie with Annie?

샌디: 아빠, 애니와 영화 봐도 돼요?

Dad: Sure. Wait a minute. Weren’t you supposed to bring home a report card from school this week?

아빠: 그럼. 잠깐만. 이번 주에 학교에서 성적표 받아와야 하는 거 아니니?

Sandy: Well, you know. Can I call Annie now?

샌디: 그게요, 아시잖아요. 지금 애니한테 전화해도 돼요?

Dad: You’re beating around the bush. Where is the report card?

아빠: 너 지금 돌려서 말하는 거잖니. 성적표 어디 있니?

Sandy: I love you, Dad. You’re the best.

샌디: 사랑해요, 아빠. 아빠가 최고예요.

Dad: Don’t try to butter me up. I want to see your grades.

아빠: 아양 떨려고 하지 마라. 네 성적을 보려는 거니까.

Sandy: My teachers are boring. My English teacher blows up every time he’s asked a question.

샌디: 우리 선생님들은 지루해요. 영어 선생님은 질문을 받을 때마다 화를 내요.

Dad: Are you telling me you failed English?

아빠: 너 영어 낙제했다고 말하는 거니?

Sandy: No! I got a D plus.

샌디: 아뇨! 저 D 플러스예요.

Dad: You can call Annie and tell her you’re not going to the movie.

아빠: 애니에게 전화해서 영화 보러 안 간다고 말해라.


▶catch a movie: 영화를 보다.

“Let’s catch a movie this Saturday.”

(이번 토요일에 영화 보러 가자.)

▶butter (one) up: 아첨하다.

“He butters his grandmother up because she is rich.”

(그 사람은 할머니가 부자니까 할머니에게 아양을 떠는 거야.)

▶blow up: 버럭 화를 내다. 호되게 꾸짖다.

“My father blew up last night when I asked him if I could drive his car.”

(지난 밤에 아버지께 아버지 차 몰아도 되냐고 했더니 아버지가 화를 내셨어.)
