Merri: I haven't talked to you for a while. How's your job?

메리: 너랑 얘기하는 것도 참 오랜 만이다. 직장은 어때?

Barbra: It's been great until yesterday. I lost out on a promotion.

바브라: 어제까지는 아주 좋았는데. 난 승진에서 밀렸어.

Merri: Oh no. How did that come about?

메리: 아니 그럴 리가. 어떻게 그렇게 됐어?

Barbra: I don't have enough experience.

바브라: 경력이 부족해서 그래.

Merri: That's the way it goes.

메리: 할 수 없지.

Barbra: I know but I wanted it so much.

바브라: 알아. 그래도 꼭 승진하고 싶었는데.

Merri: Keep working hard and you'll get it the next time.

메리: 지금처럼 열심히 일하면 다음엔 승진할 거야.

Barbra: I'm thinking about looking for another job.

바브라: 다른 직장을 찾아볼까 하는 생각도 해.

Merri: Why? You said you liked this job. Don't run away from it.

메리: 왜? 너 지금 직장 좋다며. 도망치지 마.

Barbra: Maybe you're right. I do like the job.

바브라: 네 말이 맞을 지도 모르겠다. 이 직장이 좋긴 좋거든.

기억할만한 표현

▶lose out (on something): (무엇을) 다른 사람에게 빼앗기다.

"She lost out on a scholarship because her grades weren't good enough."

▶come about: 생기다, 일어나다.
