Korean Bell Needs Help
The Korean Bell Preservation Committee is raising funds to preserve the Korean Bell of Friendship in San Pedro. In 1976, the Republic of Korea sent 30 craftsmen to assemble the massive bronze bell on the bluffs in Angel's Gate Park. Modeled after the Emille Bell in Korea, the monument educates the public about Korean culture and has been used for weddings, filmings, and veterans' commemorations.
Yet almost four decades of wind, sea salt, and bird excrement have caused the deterioration of the bell.
Although the committee has already helped improve the bell in small increments, such as a 2011 project to strengthen the link that carries the bell, a full restoration will be expensive. The Republic of Korea has allotted $275,000 for repairs, but the committee hopes to raise the rest of the estimated $360,000 cost from people in America.
"Someone who gives you a gift shouldn't have to take care of it," says committee leader Ernest Lee. "We should take some responsibility."
Lee cites the recent renovation of the Statue of Liberty as an example that such a project can be successful. "The community all pitched in to refurbish and repair the statue to reopen it."
While the committee is accepting donations of all sizes, Lee hopes to connect with many small donors. "Even if you have just a dollar, you can help us out," says Lee. "There just is more meaning from getting $1000 from a thousand people each donating one dollar."
According to Tanya Hong, a former South Korean citizen and current Southern Californian, the committee's efforts are noble.
"It is so important to learn about our history," says Hong, "and I am glad that the committee is trying to save the bell to ensure that future generations understand the relationship and friendship between [Korea and the United States]."
