[오늘의 생활영어] bend over backwards; 도움을 주려 애쓰다

(Jack and Ray are talking in the office…)

(잭과 레이가 사무실에서…)


Jack: Hi, Ray. I’d like to run over some things about your business trip.

잭: 레이, 안녕. 너 출장 가는 거 말이야, 다시 살펴봤으면 하는 게 있는데.

Ray: Sure. Any last-minute suggestions?

레이: 그렇게 해. 마지막으로 무슨 아이디어가 있는 거야?

Jack: Yeah, about the meeting with the people from Ivy Online on Tuesday.

잭: 응. 화요일에 아이비 온라인 사람들하고 회의 하잖아.

Ray: We’re having lunch with them at 1 pm.

레이: 오후 1시에 점심 하기로 했지.

Jack: Exactly. This could be an important deal for us, so bend over backwards to impress them.

잭: 바로 그거야. 우리한테는 중요한 거래가 될 수도 있으니까 어떻게 하든 강한 인상을 줘야 해.

Ray: I can do that. Anything else?

레이: 그렇게 하면 되지. 또 다른 건?

Jack: Yes. See if they’re into baseball or basketball. If they are, I can get some really good tickets for them.

잭: 응. 그쪽 사람들이 야구나 농구 좋아하는지 살펴봐. 좋아하면 내가 정말 괜찮은 경기 입장권을 구할 수 있거든.

Ray: That should impress them.

레이: 그거 인상적이겠다.

Jack: I hope so. Doing business with them could really help us down the road.

잭: 그랬으면 좋겠다. 그쪽 사람들하고 거래하면 앞으로 우리한테 정말 도움이 될 수 있다.

Ray: I’ll do my best.

레이: 최선을 다 할게.


▶run over: 준비가 잘 됐는지 다시 살펴보다.

“I’ve been running over the questions that I want to ask.” (묻고 싶은 게 다 넣었는지 질문을 다시 살펴보는 중이야.)

▶(one) is into (something): (누가 무엇에) 흥미를 갖다. 빠지다.

“He was into poker until he lost all of his money.” (그는 돈을 다 잃을 때까지 포커에 빠져 있었어.)

▶down the road: 앞으로 언젠가.

“We might get married, but that’s down the road.” (우리 결혼할 지도 몰라. 미래의 일이지만.)
