According to the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA), the number of hair loss patients in South Korea increased from 225,000 in 2018 to 248,000 in 2022, representing an average annual growth rate of about 2.5%. Global market research firm Grand View Research estimates that the global hair loss treatment market will reach approximately 12 trillion KRW (around 9 billion USD) by 2024 and could grow to 30 trillion KRW (about 220 billion USD) by 2030.

The rise in demand is driven not only by aging and genetic factors but also by an increase in younger patients. In 2022, 40.1% of hair loss patients in South Korea were in their 20s and 30s. As this generation is socially active and places high importance on appearance, hair loss can lead to emotional stress and social pressures. This has contributed to a growing need for early recognition and treatment.

Dr. Hyung-Gon Son, medical director at Hairon Clinic, emphasized, “Treating hair loss purely as a cosmetic issue is no longer sufficient. Among younger patients, we are seeing underlying health issues such as hormonal imbalances, autoimmune disorders, chronic inflammation, stress, and sleep disturbances that contribute to hair loss. Recognizing hair loss as a potential signal of internal health concerns is increasingly important.”

He added, “It is crucial not only to address hair condition but also to identify and treat underlying health issues. At Hairon Clinic, we prioritize an internal medicine–based approach to hair loss treatment.”

The clinic’s team of internal medicine specialists, many of whom have experience in university hospitals, uses blood tests, hormone analyses, and immune system assessments to identify the root causes of hair loss. In addition to standard medication, the clinic employs treatments such as mesotherapy injections and combination drug therapy to enhance results.

This integrated internal medicine approach has received positive attention from international patients as well. Hairon Clinic partners with medical tourism agencies to provide multilingual support and personalized consultations. Recently, the clinic’s profile has risen further following visits from several high-profile international clients.

Dr. Son explained, “If hormonal changes are the cause, internal medicine treatment is necessary. For factors related to overall health and lifestyle, including stress or sleep disorders, internal medicine assessment and treatment are the most effective. Simply opting for hair transplantation without understanding the underlying causes can lead to continued hair loss around the transplanted area, resulting in an uneven appearance over time.”

He concluded, “The priority should be restoring the health of hair follicles, not just the hair itself. Achieving this requires careful evaluation and treatment by experienced medical professionals.”
