On Friday March 25 2011 musical legends such as Taylor Swift Avril Lavigne Alanis Morisette and many more, graced the stage of Woodbridge High School's theatre. Although the actual stars were not present the likenesses and energy of the aforementioned were: the vocal music department hosted an open-mic night concert called "Legends" where students and faculty could sing songs by their favorite musical legends - as long as they committed fully to imitating their artist through performance style and costume.
"It was a concert where your favorite musical legends came to life on the Woodbridge stage" said Rob Blaney Choir director and department head.
The two-hour show was fast-paced and fluid treating the audience to twenty-two acts ranging from impersonations of Jason Mraz to Frank Sinatra. Participants in the concert showcased their talents against the professional backdrop of a full band consisting of keyboards guitars bass drums and back-up singers with a continuous photo slideshow of the musician they were paying homage to.
Performers chose standout songs from the discography of their legends and donned replica costumes to enhance their acts - math teacher Kent Metfessel tipped his hat to Ozzy Osbourne by singing "Paranoid" in a fringed white pantsuit while junior Christiana Crabbe epitomized an 80's throwback in her rendition of "Time After Time" in mismatched leg-warmers and side-swept big hair.
"It was like sitting in the best karaoke bar ever" said Dianna Lam a senior at Woodbridge High. "I knew almost every song and everybody was singing along."
The concert's participants were chosen through auditions last month open to anyone on campus - musical education was not a requirement.
According to senior Jamie Castelar who impersonated country legend Shania Twain the concert was a success. "We got a lot of positive feedback from people - it was new and unique and I'm glad that all the effort put into the show finally paid off!"
