National Pension Service of Korea, formally known as NPS, wields a powerful influence on the global financial market. In 2003, investment in bonds, a relatively safe but less profitable asset, accounted for 90 percent of its investment, and investment in stocks was 9.8 percent. By the end of 2011, investment in bonds was just 64 percent, and investment in stocks rose to 24 percent. These numbers show that the investment strategy of NPS has become more aggressive.
While the accumulated average profit from 1988 to 2011 has been 6.64 percent, the average profit from 2009 to 2011 is 7.31 percent.
In 2006, NPS created the Social Responsibility Fund, which grew from $400 million in 2007 to $3.2 billion by 2011.
The NPS has helped to strengthen the Korean economy through ethical investments. NPS has supported venture companies, and gained profits in the process, as angel funds do in the United States.
Also, NPS invests in more than $780 million in “green” industries such as recyclable energy and environment-friendly facilities.
With its profitable and ethical portfolio, NPS has helped to strengthen the Korean economy and is earning its name as a power player in the global financial market.
The NPS’ investment in North America includes Macerich Retail, Colonial Pipeline, and Hemsley. Its global investments in 2011 total about $400 billion.
