맞춤법에선 어간의 끝음절 모음이 'ㅏ·ㅗ'일 때는 어미를 '아'로, 그 밖의 모음일 때는 '어'로 적도록 하고 있다. '뱉다'는 어간의 끝음절 모음이 'ㅏ·ㅗ'가 아니기 때문에 '뱉어·뱉었다·뱉어내다'라고 써야 한다. '뺏다' '맺다'도 마찬가지로 '뺏어''맺어' 등으로 활용된다. 따라서 '침을 뱉았다'는 맞춤법에 어긋난다.
