Utopai Studios Expands AI-Powered Film and TV Production, Unveils Five Titles for 2027

Developing and producing 25 AI-powered film and TV projects using proprietary cinematic storytelling AI system PAI

Utopai Studios, the world’s largest independent AI-native film and TV studio, is expanding its AI-powered film and television production through collaborations with filmmakers and production companies in Korea and around the world.

Utopai Studios currently has 25 film and television projects in development and production, combining AI technology with traditional filmmaking methods. In 2027, the studio plans to release five titles globally: three feature films including “Half Moon,” “Cortés” and “The Most Serious Fart” and two series including “Space Nation” and “Journey to the West: The Lost Five Hundred Years.”
 
Half Moon is a global co-production bringing together Korean and German filmmaking talent. The live-action feature was written and is being directed by Korean filmmaker Yang Hyo-joo, with Korea’s Paper Barn Studios serving as a co-producer alongside Utopai Studios and Germany’s In Good Company. Principal photography began in Germany in August 2026, with the film slated for release in 2027.
 
Set on a remote island in the North Sea, Half Moon follows a young girl, Yeri, and her aunt, Ajin, as they spend a summer together, exploring themes of loneliness, family wounds, belonging and emotional healing. The film is being made primarily through traditional live-action filmmaking, centered on actors’ performances and director-led storytelling, with Utopai Studios’ cinematic storytelling AI system PAI supporting selected visual elements.
 
Headquartered in Mountain View, California, Utopai Studios is a global studio spanning content development, financing, production and distribution. The company is led by co-founder and CEO Cecilia Shen and co-founder and CTO Jie Yang, and is valued at approximately $1 billion.
 

Utopai Studios’ AI production strategy is not about using AI to create every aspect of its content. Instead, AI is applied selectively based on the needs of each project and its creators. PAI, Utopai Studios’ proprietary cinematic storytelling AI system, supports many stages of film and video production, including visual development, scene planning, continuity across scenes, video generation and editing.

The role of AI varies from project to project. In Half Moon, AI supports selected visual elements, while the historical epic Cortés uses AI-assisted production to help overcome the cost and scale constraints involved in realizing large-scale scenes. Journey to the West: The Lost Five Hundred Years, an animated series inspired by the classic Chinese novel, uses AI-generated animation for primary production.
 
Utopai Studios is also expanding its presence in the global broadcast and streaming market with the sci-fi series Space Nation. The eight-episode series is being produced by Ex Machina Studios and co-produced by Utopai Studios and Brazil’s Globoplay.
 
The studio is also developing The Most Serious Fart, an animated feature based on the children’s book of the same name, for theatrical release in 2027.  
 
Beyond film and television, Utopai Studios is expanding its content ecosystem into sports entertainment through a strategic partnership with NBA star Carmelo Anthony’s Creative 7 Productions.
 
Utopai Studios sees AI not as the goal of content production, but as a tool to expand creators’ capabilities and help address the time, cost and scale constraints of traditional filmmaking.
 
Building on its current slate of 25 projects, Utopai Studios plans to continue expanding co-productions with creators and production companies around the world while developing global entertainment IP that can extend beyond film and television into multiple formats.
