SEOUL, South Korea — Dr. Hyunhwa Kim, Medical Director of NEWVE Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, participated as a lecturer in the REEPOT Masters physician training program held at the headquarters of CLASSYS on September 12.

The educational program brought together physicians and medical professionals from across Korea who currently use REEPOT or are interested in incorporating the technology into their clinical practice. The program covered topics ranging from the fundamental principles of the REEPOT laser to its clinical application in the treatment of pigmented lesions. Following the lectures, a live treatment session was conducted to demonstrate its application in an actual clinical setting.
REEPOT is a 532 nm Nd:YAG laser system developed by CLASSYS, a South Korean medical aesthetic device company. The device is designed for the treatment of selected superficial pigmented lesions, particularly solar lentigines, commonly referred to as sun spots or age spots.
The 532 nm wavelength is strongly absorbed by melanin, allowing laser energy to target melanin-rich epidermal lesions. REEPOT combines this wavelength with contact cooling and compression of the treatment area.
Its VSLS (Vasculature Salvage Laser Surgery) technology uses cooling and compression to temporarily reduce local blood flow during laser treatment. This is designed to reduce competing absorption by blood while allowing laser energy to be delivered more selectively to the pigmented target. Contact cooling also helps protect the epidermal surface and limit unnecessary thermal exposure to surrounding tissue.

Dr. Kim introduced REEPOT into her clinical practice in early 2023 and has since accumulated extensive clinical experience treating various types of pigmented lesions. Based on this experience, she has continued to participate as a lecturer and speaker in educational programs for physicians in Korea and internationally, sharing her clinical experience in REEPOT procedures and laser treatment of pigmentation.
During the REEPOT Masters program, Dr. Kim emphasized that effective pigmentation treatment involves more than simply learning how to operate a laser device. A major focus of her lecture was how physicians can distinguish different types of pigmented lesions in clinical practice and determine an appropriate treatment strategy based on the characteristics of the lesion and the patient's skin.
Brown spots on the skin may look similar but can represent very different conditions. Solar lentigines, freckles, seborrheic keratoses, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) differ in their characteristics, depth, response to laser treatment, and risk of recurrence or post-treatment pigmentation.
Accurate assessment before treatment is therefore important. Even lesions that appear similar in color may require different treatment approaches depending on their diagnosis, depth, and individual skin characteristics. Dr. Kim also discussed the importance of evaluating each patient's baseline skin condition and susceptibility to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation before determining a treatment plan.
“Pigmented lesions may look similar on the surface, but solar lentigines, freckles, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can respond very differently to treatment,” said Dr. Kim.
“During this program, rather than focusing only on how to operate the device, I wanted to share how we evaluate these lesions in actual clinical practice—how to distinguish different types of pigmentation, assess the patient's skin condition and pigmentation risk, and use those findings to determine an appropriate treatment strategy.”
As Medical Director of NEWVE Clinic, Dr. Kim continues to share her clinical experience through educational programs for physicians in Korea and abroad, with a focus on safe and effective approaches to laser treatment for pigmentation disorders. Through these ongoing lectures, she aims to contribute to the practical application of evidence-based pigmentation treatment and to help physicians make more informed treatment decisions based on accurate diagnosis, individual skin characteristics, and potential treatment risks.
