This global joint research was initiated to accelerate the development and commercialization of new technologies for treating intractable brain diseases by combining Panacell Biotech’s proprietary exosome platform technology with the extensive clinical expertise of leading medical institutions in Korea and abroad.

The participating U.S. research team belongs to a university hospital with world-class medical staff and research infrastructure. The Korean researchers are likewise physicians from a leading medical institution equipped with extensive clinical experience and advanced research facilities, and strong research synergy is expected.

The core of this joint research is to validate the therapeutic efficacy of an anticancer drug-loaded exosome platform that crosses the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and precisely strikes only target cancer cells. Using the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model, the researchers plan to precisely reproduce and demonstrate the process by which the intravenously administered targeted exosome therapeutic efficiently penetrates the BBB and is stably delivered to target cancer cells within the brain, where it kills them.

Existing glioblastoma treatments have been limited by an extremely low rate of drug delivery into brain tissue due to the strong barrier function of the BBB, as well as serious side effects, such as damage to normal brain cells at high doses, and high recurrence rates.

If this research is successfully carried out, it is expected to produce an innovative new drug that overcomes the limitations of existing treatments through a next-generation drug delivery platform that secures both BBB permeability and targeting capability, and that changes the paradigm of the global glioblastoma therapeutics market.

Glioblastoma is the most common and most lethal malignant brain tumor among those that arise in the brain. It progresses very rapidly and carries a high risk of recurrence even after surgery, making it a representative intractable disease for which effective treatments have been lacking, to the point of being called a “graveyard of therapeutics.”

Panacell Biotech plans to use this joint research as an opportunity to expand collaboration with researchers in Korea and abroad and to strengthen its research capabilities for developing exosome-based therapeutics.

Seung-ho Choi, CEO of Panacell Biotech, stated, “Collaboration with a top-tier overseas medical institution and a major domestic tertiary general hospital is a result of our technological competitiveness being recognized internationally.” He added, “Based on validation in the MCAO model, we will precisely demonstrate the BBB penetration and targeting performance of the anticancer drug-loaded targeted exosomes and deliver tangible results aimed at the global market at an early stage.”
