The College of William and Mary is the second-oldest institution of higher education in the United States.
It was established in 1693 by King William III and Queen Mary II, 57 years after the establishment of Harvard University (1636) and 8 years before Yale University (1701). William and Mary is actually a public university, despite its name.
When applying for admissions to this school, be careful not to write college in your essays and university in the college name (i.e. The University of William and Mary or William and Mary University).
William and Mary is located in Williamsburg, Virginia, about 40 miles north of Norfolk, Virginia. Williamsburg, for those who do not know the history of America, was one of the first New England colonies and also became a prosperous tobacco-based colony. Although we don‘t grow tobacco now, Williamsburg became a tourist city of the pre-revolutionary life.
I am currently a junior at the College of William and Mary. My life at William and Mary has consisted of loads of studying, sports activities, school activities, and a part-time job at the Modern Languages Department. Most of my day consists of studying since William and Mary is one of the hardest universities to get As in. The student to professor ratio is on average 15:1. This is a very small public university.
Because there are just a few students in each class, the professor expects every student to come into class with a full understanding of the topic and be ready to participate in each lecture.
Also, through my college life I have rarely come across “curves.” Professors at William and Mary despise giving out curves, and the mean exam grades are so high that there is no need for curves. Now, this does not mean the exams are easy, but rather because curves are so rare, the students at William and Mary study more to obtain high scores.
Lastly, the university is located in the middle of nowhere; therefore it is unlikely for a student to find anything to do off-campus within a 20 mile radius, leading them to study even longer.
The next article will elaborate upon my activities at William and Mary.
