Haelim Youn: Global Arts Program Coordinator Navigating the Space between Performance and Culture

Haelim Youn, an Arts Program Coordinator based in New York, is emerging as a distinctive voice in planning and directing diverse cultural events, including performing arts. She has a particular focus on navigating the delicate space between performing arts and audience experience. Her approach is shaped by her dual expertise: a foundational background in classical piano and practical work experience in arts programs. This combined perspective allows her to interpret the needs of the performer, while simultaneously engineering the “organic relationship” required for substantial audience delivery.   Working at the Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY), Youn plans and directs art programs spanning the full spectrum of Korean culture, ranging from K-pop education programs to genre-fusion projects and traditional arts performances. Her commitment to presenting Korean culture, which has recently been attracting global attention, in a comprehensive and in-depth manner has been embodied throughout her programs. As an Arts Program Coordinator, she has also focused on pioneering audience-participatory performance formats, based on her belief that artistic quality can be elevated by maximizing in-person engagement. To achieve this, she personally organized the entire process, from establishing the program's vision to its execution.     A testament to her approach is the “K-POP Academy”, which adopted digital media channels to expand audience engagement beyond physical theater walls. The project consequently recorded over 340,000 views for a single piece of content and over 550,000 impressions, proving the program’s extensibility and market resonance. Her participatory performance format can work as a way to attract audiences to the theater as well as an approach for dissemination through digital platforms.     Furthermore, Youn launched the “GUT” project, which is a modern reinterpretation of Gut, traditional Korean shamanistic ritual and performing art. Rather than presenting GUT as a static artifact, Youn tailored the complex spiritual performance for the specific cultural context of a New York audience. She also oversaw every stage of the project, from concept development and program design to on-site operations management. The performance received an enthusiastic response, resulting in the scheduling of additional shows to meet continuous demand. The success of the “GUT” project was recognized as a new model of performance that expanded audience engagement by reinterpreting traditional Korean arts within a modern, global context.     Youn’s practice suggests that the future of cultural programming lies not in one-off spectacles, but in the continuous reconfiguration of art as a shared, interactive experience. Through her ongoing pursuit of incorporating audience-participatory formats and more inclusive modes of appreciation via digital media, Youn proves that performing arts programs can grow into cultural experiences that extend beyond the theater and resonate with audiences’ daily lives.     Youn stated, "It is essential to shift our focus from simply presenting prepared performances to designing highly immersive cultural experiences that reflect the needs and lived experiences of the audience." Youn, who majored in classical piano, further developed her art management capabilities by completing a master’s program in Arts and Entertainment Management at the Lubin School of Business of Pace University. This interdisciplinary training allows her a competitive edge in her field, which requires both a comprehensive understanding of the performing arts and practical management capabilities.     Through her cross-cultural art programs and participatory performance formats, as well as her ability to oversee projects from conception to execution, she has established herself as a distinguished Arts Program Coordinator in the fields of performing arts and cultural programming. Her work demonstrates that international cultural exchange can remain an active and meaningful part of the contemporary art landscape.
