My name is Anna and I am a freshman at Loyola Marymount University.
I am writing to you because I wanted to tell you that I admire and respect you for the hard work you have done to make an improvement in the Korean society, especially in America. When I first read about you, I was in awe because you came to California and worked to advance the lives of the group of Koreans living in San Francisco. I thought it was very daring of you to create a community even though there were only few Koreans. Without abandoning the small Korean population in America, the fact that you diligently worked with the Koreans to help them become strong individuals was astounding. Your duty as a leader who had a strong sense of civic responsibility led me to choose you as a role model in my heart.
Currently, I am a fellow for Asian Pacific Student Service at my school. As a leader in the small Asian population at my school, I always look up to you for support for I feel like you have been in a similar situation. My fellows and I work on bringing all the other Asian American students together and hope to make them culturally aware of their own and other Asians' ethnicity. Just as you saw the need for social change, internally and externally for Koreans living in San Francisco and actually made a change through starting the first community organization for Koreans in America, I too want to a difference at my school by making people more aware of the Korean and Asian community in United States.
Your daughter, Susan Ahn Cuddy told me a phrase that was brought down by you, "Be a good American citizen… but don't forget your heritage". As a Korean American, this phrase is engraved in my heart. I will work to impact other Korean Americans just as you have improved the lives of Korean immigrants. Now as a leader in my community, you have given me the courage to not be afraid but to make a greater change in a small world.
